The University of Virginia was founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819. This top ranked
public university was built for the purpose of creating leaders who are "well-prepared
to help shape the future of the nation."
In continuation of Jefferson's vision, the University has faithfully re-created parts of
the Charlottesville campus, including the world-famous Rotunda, Thornton Hall and the
distinctive Pavilions which surround the beautifully manicured lawn. Visitors land
in the lawn and are greeted with one of the best re-creations in the virtual world.
The Rotunda in Second Life® will offer many services that students will use on a
daily basis. They will be able to access information for admissions, registration, alumni
services, virtual tours and more. The third floor library will house a rotating
exhibition in a visually pleasing environment.
The Pavilions that line the Lawn house many offices and services to encourage
camaraderie and collaboration between students, instructors and staff. These include a
coffee house, orientation and several informative offices.
Thornton Hall houses videos on departmental
information, offices for students to interact with staff and collaborative spaces
for students to work together on individual courses.
